(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Chicago man was found guilty Thursday of trying to rob a beverage supply driver with a rifle nearly two years ago in Naperville.

DuPage County prosecutors said the attempted robbery happened on the morning of July 27, 2021, at a Jewel grocery store located at 1759 W. Ogden Ave.

As the driver began unloading pallets of liquor and wine, officials said Frederick Holmon, 32, approached the driver with a 9mm rifle. He allegedly told the victim: “It’s not worth your life.”

The driver refused to turn over any property and subsequently ran toward a Jewel employee.

“The guy’s got a gun,” he yelled.

Authorities said Holmon then ran to his Chevrolet Suburban and fled on Aurora Avenue. Naperville police found Holman’s car a few minutes later, and when they searched the vehicle they found the rifle, an extended magazine, and a loaded revolver. Holman was arrested.

Holmon has been in custody at the DuPage County Jail since then.

On Thursday, after a one-day bench trial, a judge found the 32-year-old guilty on a number of charges, including attempted armed robbery.

Holmon faces a penalty of between fifteen to thirty years when he's sentenced next month.
