CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago's official Christmas tree is now home for the holidays.

The northbound lanes of Michigan Avenue were blocked off at Millennium Park so a crane crew could lift the 45-foot-tall blue spruce from a flatbed truck and set it in a stand, with little fanfare.

WBBM Newsradio watched last week, along with Morgan Park resident Catherine Townsend, as the tree was removed from the yard where she planted it 35-years ago.

"Little bit of sadness to see it go, but I have more joy because I know that a lot of people will look at it down in Millennium Park and really marvel at the beauty," Townsend said.

Her daughter entered the tree into the city’s contest. It was chosen from about 75.

The tree-lighting ceremony Nov. 19 will not be an in-person public spectacle this year. It can be viewed virtually on YouTube.
