ComEd warns of door-to-door scammers, after incident in Lakeview

Door-to-door scammers are working in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood.

They've been posing as ComEd workers. Exactly how they intend to get people to part with their money isn't clear. Two Lakeview residents who know better Jennie Ross and Cobey Brown told CBS 2, they came knocking with a clipboard.

"Anyone can print out a ComEd statement and walk around with a binder and say they're from ComEd," Ross said.

Brown explained what the scammers said during the incident.

"'Do you live here?' I'm like, 'Yes.' 'We can save you money on your ComEd bill.' And immediately, wiped out the binder," Brown said.

Brown told them, people are getting wise to what you're doing.

Scammers may demand payment for a bill. They may be trying to get inside. Whatever the case, ComEd Spokesman Tom Dominguez said that's not what the utility does.

"They will not show up at your door," he said.

The scammers in Lakeview had the door closed on them. They went on to the next house.
