CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A police chase started in Gary Monday afternoon and ended in Oak Lawn with the arrests of two carjacking suspects.
As police pursuits go, this was long, more than 30-miles from Gary to Oak Lawn. It covered three interstates and initially involved six Gary police squad cars and ultimately involved several others.
A license plate reading camera flagged the stolen SUV and when Gary police tried to make a traffic stop, the pursuit was on, weaving through traffic until the driver got off Interstate 294 at 95th Street and hit a light pole.
One suspect was arrested right away.
A second man ran, prompting a warning to area residents until they found the guy hiding under a parked car. Police figured the man could have been armed.
The SUV had been taken during an armed confrontation in Chicago.
