(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker on Wednesday said local government officials hold the key to whether the state will have to impose new — and much more onerous — restrictions to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

On Chicago’s Northwest Side, Pritzker was asked what — if any —statewide crackdowns be imposed as new cases and hospitalizations for COVID-19 continue to skyrocket.

Illinois already has a mask mandate, he noted. What’s needed is for local governments and local officials to live up to their responsibilities, he said.

Pritzker cited Champaign and Carbondale as two cities that are doing things right.

On Wednesday, Illinois reported another single-day record for coronavirus cases: 12,657 cases. Another 145 people died from COVID-19 in the same 24-hour period.

The state’s positivity rate is edging toward 14%.
