CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Two people are starting the workweek without their wheels, as Chicago police said they were carjacked in Lake View early Monday morning.
Police said the carjackings took place blocks apart along Ashland Avenue.
The first happened around 2:20 a.m., when an 18-year-old said two males got out of a black Jeep and held him up near Belmont Avenue. One of the suspects took off in 18-year-old’s black Honda Civic while the other returned to the Jeep.
About one hour and 20 minutes later, a man and a woman said three males in a black car held them up near Irving Park Road as they were parking — and took their red Dodge Charger.
Authorities said one suspect was armed in both cases. No one was hurt and no one is in custody.
As of last week, the department said there were 14,790 car thefts in 2023. That’s more than double what it was at the same point in 2022.
