CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Following a chaotic early morning attack on a Red Line train Friday, Chicago Police say they are continuing to do whatever it takes to make public transportation safe.

Chicago Police Department Superintendent David Brown said a man on board on a southbound Red Line train was first approached by three men who demanded his cell phone around 2 a.m.

During the struggle, The victim took a small knife from his pocket and stabbed one of the attackers, who tried to take his cell phone. As the train was stopped at North and Clybourn, the three suspects left the train and a fourth person entered and began attacking the same victim.

Brown said two more suspects would eventually enter into the chaos including one that stabbed the victim several times with a knife and glass bottle. He was hospitalized in serious condition.

"All six offenders due to the quick response by Chicago police officers are in custody. Charges are pending."

While Brown points to a statistical drop in crime on the CTA, he said public perception plays a big role.

"Being transparent and being honest is really important when it comes to perceptions. We're doing all we can we increase our presence."
