CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown has provided more information regarding Tuesday's mass shooting incidents that left nearly a dozen people shot and one killed in Back of the Yards and Jackson Park.
The shooting in the Back of the Yards, according to the superintendent, was about revenge by a recently paroled gang leader over the murder of his brother.
The leader, he said, was arrested in March for unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.
“Our police officers did their job. They took a gun off the street off a felon who had a violent history. That felon got a cash bond. The risk assessment on violent offenders by our judges needs to get better,” said Brown.
The leader’s brother was murdered in April and since then, Brown said, there's been an escalation of violence between the gangs.
He said rival gang members were targeted. One was killed and four wounded.
While police officers were trying to give the victims first aid, he said they were attacked by two men, both now charged with battery to a police officer.
Brown said the shooting in Jackson Park occurred when a female rapper was live-streaming the making of a music video.
Another group started live streaming, themselves, and then there was an argument and guns came out. Four women and two men were wounded.
Those involved were believed to have driven through the grass in the park to get around police barricades that had been set up to keep people out and prevent trouble.
Police found about a dozen guns at the scene. Nobody is in custody in either incident.
