CPS to drop mask mandate ‘in the near future,’ CEO says

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The Chicago Public Schools appear close to giving parents a choice of whether their children are masked or not at school.

Chicago Schools CEO Pedro Martinez sent a letter to principals Tuesday evening, saying the CPS mask requirement will be changed in the near future to “mask optional.”

Martinez and chief education officer Bogdana Chkoumbova wrote “while we will continue to strongly encourage the use of masks in schools, we expect that CPS will be moving to a mask optional model for all students and staff in the near future.

“We understand that this will be a major adjustment for our school communities, and we are committed to providing you with all the support you need during this transition,” they said.

Sides are due in court a week from Thursday.

The CPS agreement with the Chicago Teachers Union indicated masking will remain in effect at least until August but now the union is surveying its members to gauge where they currently stand on masking.
