(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Thousands of Chicago Public Schools students have declined to join their classmates at school buildings this year, and CPS says they will have the same remote-learning option next fall.
CPS will have full-time, in-person instruction for all students next year, but there will be the remote system, too, if families prefer to go that route.
Jennie Biggs of the education advocacy group Raise Your Hand commended CPS for the dual strategy, given the uncertainty about COVID-19 vaccine availability and whether it’ll be offered to children under age 16.
It also helps retain some parents from leaving the district if they aren’t comfortable with the in-person option, Biggs said. CPS has lost more than 14,000 students this school year.
CPS said of those who responded to its most recent survey, 139,000 students chose to stay home, while 121,000 are learning from home.
