CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - This past Halloween was another opportunity to remember a Chicagoan who made “Halloween” a famous name on the radio.
“To hear that she literally was such a powerful force in radio, and we’re just hearing about her now, I feel like that’s a little sad,” said Grace Golembiewski, a masters student in journalism DePaul as well as the current GM of Radio DePaul.
She’s referring to a woman named “Halloween” Martin, who was born on Oct. 31, 1900 and graduated from DePaul before becoming a pioneer in radio, including on WBBM. Halloween Martin is frequently credited as Chicago’s first disc jockey. She hosted a morning radio program, called “Musical Clock,” from 1929 to 1946.
DePaul’s archives have put together a story about Halloween Martin, keeping her name alive.
“I’m so proud as a woman to hear that a woman was such a vital force in radio,” Golembiewski said.
