CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Early voting in Chicago is already at record levels for a municipal election in the city, with more than a week left before Election Day.
Four years ago, with 12 days to go before Election Day, there were fewer than 19,000 early votes and 7,500 mail-in votes. Election officials said this year, with 12 days to go, as of Thursday, there were more than 28,000 early votes and 5,700 mail-in ballots.
Chicago Board of Election spokesman Max Bever told Block Club Chicago it’s too early to tell whether overall voter turnout will be higher than previous years.
Election officials are hoping to see at least a 40% voter turnout. Previous voter turnouts have averaged 36%.
