(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Maribel Macedo and Armando Gomez owned Isel's Cleaners in Edgewater. The couple traveled to Disney World in Florida to celebrate the new year and their long-postponed honeymoon. Their daughter, Isela Macedo, said it was their first vacation in years.
“They were dancing, and it was beautiful to watch them have fun because they've always been such committed people to their work and community,” Macedo said.
Macedo said her parents hit the road right after the fireworks show so they could get back to Chicago. Minutes later, they were both killed in a 21-vehicle crash on Interstate 75.
“They were each other's world,” she said. “They loved each other so much … them passing together was maybe something that was meant to happen
The family set up a GoFundMe page to cover funeral and other expenses. As of Thursday afternoon, it has raised over $26,600.
“All that hard work and all that support that they gave and poured into the community is coming back to help me and it's very emotional,” she said.

Macedo said she doesn’t have the words to express how grateful she is for the support she’s received.
“It brings me so much peace because with every story and every life they touched, they're still out there, and there are still pieces of them alive in everyone in the community,” she said.
The couple's funeral is scheduled for Saturday.
