Election Day: New era for Chicago City Council

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - No matter who wins the elections among Chicago’s 50 Wards, the City Council will end up with a substantially different look and feel.

For the first time in half a century, the City Council will not count the powerful, former finance Committee chair Edward Burke among its ranks. He didn’t run for re-election while facing a federal corruption indictment. Former Budget chair Alderwoman Carrie Austin, also under federal indictment, isn’t running either.

And the Council is losing some of its most experienced and knowledgeable members, including Housing Chair Harry Osterman, Zoning Chair Tom Tunney, Alderwoman Leslie Hairston, and Workforce Development Chair Susan Sadlowski Garza. About 16 alderpeople have called or are calling it quits.

Not all of the institutional knowledge is flowing out the door. Longtime Alderwoman Pat Dowell is running unopposed for re-election, the current Finance Committee Chair Scott Waguespack had no opposition. Neither does West Side Alderman Walter Burnett Jr. He will become the Council’s longest-serving member when Ed Burke is gone.
