An annual tradition at the Cook County Clerk's office looked a bit different Monday.
Ordinarily, couples wanting to be at the center of the first wedding of the year wait in line outside the clerk's office on the first business day of the new year.
Things are obviously different now, due to the pandemic.
Ashley Graff, 35, and Undra Baldwin, 37, were picked as this 2021’s “first couple” through a lottery system for the first marriage license, and Clerk Karen Yarbrough officiated Monday over Zoom.
The couple is from Elgin. They have been dating for nearly 20 years, the clerk’s office said.
In addition to bragging rights, the newlyweds receive a dinner gift box, champagne flutes, flowers, cooking and dance lessons and other donations from local businesses.
