(WBBM NEWSRADIO)— The effort to unionize workers at the Art Institute of Chicago has taken a big step.

After a 142-44 vote, the employees are one step closer to creating the Art Institute of Chicago Workers United labor union. A letter from union leaders to employees says the next steps include meetings and elections for a bargaining team.

A website created by the newly formed union accuses Art Institute leadership of failing to prioritize or understand workers’ needs and concerns. It also points to several other cultural and educational institutions that successfully unionized to improve wages, benefits and workers’ rights.
