EVANSTON (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Evanston will have a new police chief next month.

After a six-month search, the city administrator has chosen Schenita Stewart to lead the department.

Stewart grew up in Evanston and calls it the lighthouse community her grandparents fled South Carolina for. With over two decades in law enforcement, she began in Cook County as a probation officer, then moved on to the Lincolnwood Police Department, working her way up to deputy chief, a post she is leaving in East Dundee. Stewart was also a member of the committee on Rethinking Responses for Common Calls for Service for an international police chief group.

City manager Luke Stowe praised Stewart as an outstanding leader with distinguished service and deep knowledge of the community.

One of the challenges she’ll face is the department’s shortage of officers, which prompted it to reassign members of its Community Policing Unit.
