(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Illinois State Fire Marshal wants the public's help in reducing the number of arson fires and catching more people who set them.
Office spokesperson JC Fultz said this is Arson Awareness Week, when both police and fire departments across the state are encouraged to reach out to their communities.
“We want to educate Illinois residents about the true cost of arson and its impact not only on individuals but on communities as a whole. We really encourage anyone, if you see something say something,” he said.
The Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office helped investigate more than 1,000 suspicious fires last year. In 41 cases, there were arrests.
Fultz said people can provide information anonymously to fire departments or police. This includes information about someone planning to set fires, he said.
