(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A settlement has been reached in last August’s accident in which two immigrants were fatally struck by a semi-truck on Interstate 80 in Grundy County.
A Cook County Circuit Court judge oversaw last week’s agreement that will reward the families of Sofiane Bessai and Brayan Jimenez Velasquez with $19.3 million.
The 33-year-old Bessai of Elgin and 26-year-old Velasquez of Lake County, Indiana, were killed on August 12, 2022 when they were rear-ended by a West Side Transport, Inc. semi-truck on westbound I-80. It was a little after 5 p.m. when the Bessai’s car was hit by the semi and then veered across the median and into oncoming, eastbound traffic. The car then crashed into an eastbound vehicle.
“This crash was caused by the semi-truck driver’s failure to pay attention to the surrounding traffic before changing lanes,” said Robert Clifford, one of the attorneys’ representing the families. “The deaths of these two young men were entirely preventable.”
