CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — There was a balloon release Thursday night outside Akeem Briscoe’s Humboldt Park home near West Potomac Avenue and Rockwell Street.

The 7-year-old boy was being remembered by family as a good kid — one who didn’t get a chance to experience much of life. A stray bullet struck and killed Akeem as he washed his hands in his own home on Wednesday night. The boy’s uncle, Dwayne Dmbry, told CBS 2:

“And people are out here just shooting around,” Dmbry said. “I don’t understand that. There’s people in homes and this is just not right, just shooting around, ‘cause a bullet doesn’t have a name on it.”

Dmbry said the family is struggling with more than one loss.

“My sister’s not doing well right now and it’s a tragedy,” Dmbry said. “I just buried his father, and I got to turn around and bury my nephew. It’s not right.”

Chicago police are still looking for the person, or people, who were shooting in an alley and fired the shot that fatally struck Akeem.

On Thursday, Mayor Lori Lightfoot issued a plea for anyone with information to come forward to police.

Chicago Police Supt. David Brown said there’s a reward of up to $15,000 for tips that might lead to charges or convictions.
