CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago Park District is set to receive $6.25 million from the federal government for improvements across the city in 2023.
Park district officials said they were grateful for the support and advocacy of local congressional members, Sen. Dick Durbin, U.S. Reps. Jan Schakowsky, Mike Quigley, Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, and Robin Kelly — who helped secure the funding that’ll go toward seven projects.
“The capital needs across our city’s parks system are great, and without outside funding support from our elected officials and other partners, many park projects would be delayed,” said Chicago Park District General Superintendent Rosa Escareno.
Among the most expensive projects in 2023 will be the creation of a new swimming pool at the Broadway Armory in Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood, which will cost an estimated $2 million. A multi-use trail at California Park on the Northwest Side is also expected to cost $2 million.
Other projects include:
-The creation of a new fieldhouse at Cragin Park, which is expected to cost $500,000.
-The city will make improvements to the Lake Michigan shoreline from 45th Street to 51st Street on the South Side, which are expected to cost $200,000.
-An estimated $350,000-worth of improvements are planned for the fieldhouse at LeClaire-Hearst Park in Garfield Ridge.
-The Lincoln Park Conservatory will receive an estimated $750,000 worth of facility renovations.
-A $450,000 study was approved for Promontory Point.
