Prosecutors alleged 19-year-old Kewan Tillman attempted to carjack a woman on July 27 at a Thornton’s gas station on the 14000 block of South Western Avenue in Posen. They accused Tillman of pointing a loaded gun at the victim and demanding the keys to her Kia Optima.

The owner of the vehicle had two children in her car. After she got them out, authorities said Tillman stole the car and drove off.

U.S. Attorney’s Office prosecutors said Tillman quickly lost control of the Kia, ran back toward the Thornton’s, and unsuccessfully attempted to force entry into a parked semi-trailer.

Tillman then tried to ditch his firearm in a sewer, authorities said.

Prosecutors said he then attempted to force entry into another vehicle. The driver of that vehicle pushed Tillman to the ground, after which Posen police officers arrested the 19-year-old.

When police discovered Tillman’s weapon, they allegedly found a “sear switch” attached to the gun, which prosecutors said could have made it capable of firing multiple shots with a single pull of the trigger.

Tillman is currently in custody. His initial appearance in federal court in Chicago has not yet been scheduled.
