CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Chicago Police officer is now charged by federal authorities for allegedly taking part in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

The charges against Karol Chwiesiuk include entering and remaining in a restricted building, disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building, and violent entry in a Capitol building.

Police Supt. David Brown learned of Chwiesiuk's involvement in early June and had this reaction:

"What happened in D.C. on Jan. 6 was an absolute disgrace. The fact that a Chicago police officer has been charged in that attack on American democracy makes my blood boil. Makes me sick to my stomach," Brown said.

Authorities have said Chwiesiuk, who joined CPD in 2018 and was relieved of his police powers following the incident, entered the Office of Sen. Jeff Merkley, an Oregon Democrat, during the riot.

While his attorneys have argued Chwiesiuk was simply exercising his First Amendment rights, he is expected to plead guilty to the charges.
