CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Fiesta Boricua, a popular Puerto Rican street festival in Humboldt Park, is slated to reopen at noon Sunday after Chicago police shut down the event early Saturday night due to reports of violence in the area.
The Chicago Fire Department said paramedics picked up a 41-year-old gunshot victim from near Division Street and Washtenaw Avenue and took him to the hospital in serious condition.
Another man, who was shot in the elbow, took himself to the hospital.
CBS 2 reported police shut down the Puerto Rican festival at least 30 minutes early amid reports that people were throwing bottles.
Festival attendee Gustavo Rivera told CBS 2 that some groups were fighting, but he added that he thought the fest was mostly under control — and that he didn’t see any gunfire.
The Chicago Police Department said it didn’t have records of anyone being shot near 1200 N. Washtenaw Ave. Saturday night.
Some festival goers only noticed something was up when the musical performer they had come to see wasn’t able to go on.
The station reported everyone they spoke to was eager to return Sunday since the festival was cut short.
