(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — People setting off their own fireworks this holiday weekend could end up contaminating sources of drinking water.

Joe Loughmiller, spokesman for Indiana American Water in northwest Indiana, said fireworks contain a lot of toxins.

When spent fireworks are left on the ground,  rain can wash away chemicals that eventually contaminate lakes, streams and rivers, he said. Loughmiller says people should clean up the debris as soon as possible.

If you are setting off fireworks near a body of water, aim them away from the water, he advises.
