CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A former Chicago Public Schools Chief of Staff has avoided prison time for a bribery scandal.

Pedro Soto was part of a committee weighing bids for a $1 billion dollar custodial contract with CPS in 2016 and 2017.

The FBI paid him a visit, and he would later be convicted of lying to the agents about passing inside information to a bidder that ultimately didn’t get the contract.  It was alleged he solicited and received bribes from a lobbyist. He ended up cooperating with the feds.

The judge, Sharon Johnson Coleman, said there were higher expectations of him as a public official. Soto said in court it was a lapse in judgment. He apologized and said he accepted full responsibility.

Soto was sentenced to 18 months of probation, a $3,000 fine and 100 hours of community service.
