NAPERVILLE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - In west suburban Naperville, Memorial Day was honored in a series of events across the city, which culminated with a parade.
At just one of the stops along Naperville’s Memorial Day observance, a Gold Star Family, the Leubkes, placed a wreath at the memorial in Veterans’ Park honoring their loved one and all those who gave their lives in service to their country.
The day began earlier at the Commander Dan Shanower 9-11 memorial, and continued at other cemeteries, and was capped off by a parade and ceremony at Central Park.
An official said this was the first full observance since COVID, a joint effort of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the turnout of people traveling from site to site with a police escort proved the effort was welcome.
Like a lot of families in Naperville, Serita Glover and her husband were there to cheer a child playing in one of several school marching bands participating in the big parade. Her son plays saxophone at Scullen Middle School. But it’s not the only reason she and her husband Jared enjoy the Memorial Day tributes. She said she enjoys seeing the entire community uniting in patriotism to honor those who served our country.

Local Congressman Bill Foster was at one of the earlier events. He said at a time when we were seeing the worst reasons for going to war over in Ukraine, this is a day to honor those who served and sacrificed with the best of intentions.
Near the end of Naperville’s Memorial Day Parade, Amy and Jason Scherer were cheering their heads off as their daughter’s marching band from Crone Middle School marched by. Then they laughed at how embarrassed their kid looked. Amy was proud of their child and this parade.
“Well, it is special. She tried something new that she’s never done before by doing band this year in middle school, and now she gets to honor our country in the biggest celebration to kick off summer, so that’s super cool,” said Amy Scherer.
