(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Lake Street beach in Gary is closed until further notice after some type of “unknown substance” was discovered in the water, city officials have announced.

Gary Mayor Jerome Prince said he made the decision after consulting with environmental officials.

The city is also monitoring Marquette Beach for any problems, but so far, it remains open and clear.

“We enjoy our amazing beaches in Gary, and we are happy to welcome every Gary resident and visitor to enjoy them. However, public safety is our top priority, and we extend that commitment to our beaches and parks,” Prince said in a news release.
