LAKE IN THE HILLS (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A GoFundMe for the UpRising Bakery and Cafe in Lake in the Hills, which was vandalized ahead of a scheduled family-friendly drag show, has raised more than $12,000.
Megan, who asked that her last name not be shared given the amount of hostility surrounding the issue, initially set the goal for the GoFundMe campaign for Uprising Bakery and Cafe at $500.
“I’m like, ‘Well, that would be nice to be able to go in and over-tip someone with $500 or just hand them a check,’” Megan said.
It kept growing, though, and by Monday evening the campaign had raised more than doubled the adjusted goal of $5,000.
Megan is not affiliated with UpRising — she said she’s a gay woman who was sad, then mad, when she heard someone had broken windows and graffitied hate speech on the café.
“I understand, and I fully know that money doesn’t solve hate,” Megan said. “Money doesn’t fix hate.”
The GoFundMe for Uprising Bakery and Cafe has helped restore some faith for Megan. She assured donors that she’s been in touch with UpRising’s owner Corrina Sac about the campaign.
Megan said the response has been much more than she expected.
“It really does show that most people are good and that, in the face of something so awful, people show up,” Megan said.
