HIGHLAND PARK (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Barrington-based charity brought its therapy horses back to Highland Park to help families process the trauma of the parade shooting.
Sunday marked the third trip to the Heller Nature Center for Poppy and Hope, the miniature horses Mane in Heaven President Dina Morgan brought to comfort families.
“There’s just something about a horse,” Morgan said. “They’re understanding, they’re not judgmental, and they bring a lot of comfort to people.”
She said in addition to petting the mini horses, children can walk them on a lead.
“It kind of builds confidence and teamwork in kids because they’re walking the miniature horses,” Morgan said. “They’re the leader, and the horse is listening to them.”
Morgan and the other volunteers cap the event at about 100 people, so kids can build up to being in larger settings once again.
“They’re helping kids take that first step to healing,” she said. “Especially with kids going back to school, I think this is a great event to try and get them to step out a little bit.”
Morgan said because of high demand, she’s planning more of the free events in Highland Park in September and October.
