HIGHLAND PARK (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The temporary memorial for the Highland Park Fourth of July Parade shooting victims was relocated Monday.

The City of Highland Park made the announcement in a statement on social media. Mayor Nancy Rotering said the memorial items will be displayed alongside the Veterans' Memorial near Central Street and St. Johns Avenue.

Rotering said the decision was made based on advice from victims' services experts at the Department of Justice.

She also noted that mental health experts cited the need to return locations to their familiar form in order to help with the healing process.

The city added that it is asking for public input on a permanent memorial, though Rotering said Highland Park does not plan to start that process until the community has been given more time to grieve.

In the meantime, Rotering said the public should continue to share ideas and suggestions via email at hpcares@cityhpil.com.
