(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Residents of Lake, LaPorte and Porter Counties in northwest Indiana reported a strong odor in the air Sunday evening — one that was so bad it prompted a large number of them to call 911.
The Michigan City Fire Department posted just after 5 p.m. that the “sulfur-like smell” was due to a natural gas leak.
It's suspected that the smell originated in an industrial area of Lake County.
As many as 17 fire crews were searching for the source of the smell, but investigators said they are still working to pinpoint the exact origin.
In a post on its Facebook page, the Chesterton Police Department asked residents to refrain from calling 911 over the offensive odor, as they need to keep the 911 lines available for those experiencing active emergencies.
Officials said the odor poses no threat to the public.
