CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Gas prices have fallen for nine weeks straight and some analysts are eyeing $3 a gallon.

The national average for a gallon of regular grade gasoline is down to $3.95 a gallon, down more than 20%, and that decline is expected to continue.

“We've already seen some stations going under the $3 a gallon mark,” said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst at gasbuddy.com.

DeHaan said it's good news for southern states like Texas and Oklahoma but here in Chicago it's a different story. He said there has been a recent decline in the city and its suburbs but many stations are moving the opposite way, going up to $4.59 a gallon.

“It looks like, as a result of the jump in wholesale prices last week, we could be talking about prices going up before they go back down,” said DeHaan.

DeHaan said he's hopeful, as we head into October and November, Chicago will see a big drop in gas prices.
