(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Gov. J.B. Pritzker was in suburban Broadview to help kick off Illinois’ back-to-school tax holiday beginning tomorrow.

Pritzker said from Aug. 5 – 14, the sales tax on school supplies, clothing, footwear, and more will drop from 6.25% to 1.25%.

Teachers will be eligible for a tax credit on school supplies purchased during Illinois’ tax holiday, Pritzker told the audience at Roosevelt Elementary School.

“Educators will also be able to take advantage of this sales tax holiday with a tax credit for school supplies of up to $250 in 2022 and $500 in 2023,” Pritzker said.

Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson said this is welcome help.

“Literally dimes, quarters, and single dollars are being measured by consumers, so buying school supplies for a child or multiple children is a significant family expenditure for parents who are surviving check to check, especially this year,” Thompson said.

Items that qualify for the sales tax holiday include binders, backpacks, calculators, notebooks, coloring utensils, lunch boxes and more. This document shows the full list.

Most clothing and footwear priced under $125 — whether that’s the full price or a sale price — will be eligible. Consumers, though, won’t enjoy the sales tax benefit if they use a coupon to bring an item under $125.

County and city sales taxes — those from Cook County or Chicago, for example — will still apply. Only the state sales tax will be affected during the holiday.
