INDIANAPOLIS (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An Indiana State Representative is proposing a bill that would give municipalities the authority to further limit the private use of fireworks.

Republican State Rep. Donna Schaibley said she likes fireworks and that she appreciates the beauty and tradition.

But she adds, "these are not small pyrotechnics. They are large and loud." She also noted the impact on pets and veterans and the injuries that often occur.

The Northwest Indiana Times reported that her legislation would give local municipalities the authority to limit the number of days they’re allowed from 12 days around the 4th of July and New Years Eve and New Years Day to five days.

The fireworks industry is fighting this.

"If you pass this bill, it will take away our rights and freedom to celebrate," said Shelli Maxwell, general manager of Fireworks Over America, said during a house committee hearing,

There will also be a significant financial impact on the fireworks industry if the legislation is passed. The proposal was tabled after the hearing.
