(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The NAACP of Indiana has put together an education plan that it calls “Indiana Black Academic Excellence.”

Educators and advocates taking part in the effort note that black students are far behind their peers.

"The state of Indiana needs to have a policy that actually denotes that racial equity is a priority of the state," said Carole Craig, a member of the Indiana NAACP.

Former teacher Shawnta Barnes shared her experience teaching black students.

"I think what was most frustrating was teaching eight graders who were at a second grade level," she said. "If we put the investment at the beginning, we won't have to spend all this money at the end remediating students in middle school and high school."

The plan calls for full-day kindergarten and making full-day preschool available as well as eliminating high stakes testing and hiring more black educators.
