(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Brandon Johnson says yes, there was significant violence over the holiday weekend, but Chicago police made the right moves to get things under control.

Johnson on Tuesday issued a written statement about the “intolerable” level of violence across the city. On Wednesday, he offered thoughts to reporters after the Chicago City Council meeting.

He applauded the police department’s “nimbleness,” as when officers quickly responded Friday to a disturbance and gunfire at North Avenue Beach.

Interim Police Supt. Fred Waller said authorities were able to coordinate their responses effectively.

“Throughout this weekend we were adjusting resources in real time, tailored to the needs of the neighborhoods, even on a block-by-block basis,” he said.

Mayor Johnson has said that many people were able to enjoy themselves over the weekend. A major event, the Sueños Music Festival in Grant Park, “went well,” he noted.

Johnson said violence is partly an outgrown of the kind of disinvestment communities have suffered for many years and which must be addressed.
