SPRINGFIELD (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The state of Illinois is preparing to auction off hundreds of pieces of unclaimed property.

Illinois Treasurer Mike Frerichs says when property in such things as safe deposit boxes goes unclaimed for years, his office receives those items for safe keeping in case the rightful owners are later found.

Eventually, he says older items need to be auctioned off to make room for more unclaimed property.

He says this year's online auction features several unique items such as a silver card and coin honoring Bulls legend Michael Jordan and items from key events in Chicago's history including the 1893 Columbian Exposition.

“We are auctioning off these items and our online auction is a wonderful opportunity to discover rare and memorable finds, either for yourself or for that special someone who will appreciate them as gifts,” Frerichs says.

Frerichs says the state will keep the money raised by the auction, in case rightful owners of the property are later found.
