CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - During a joint appearance on Chicago's South Side Monday, Mayor Lightfoot wholeheartedly endorsed Governor Pritzker in his re-election bid, even though the governor still hasn't announced his choice in Chicago's mayoral race.
The governor has said the reason he hasn't made an endorsement is because he's focused on his own re-election campaign.
When asked about that, Lightfoot said she doesn't need Pritzker's endorsement to back his re-election bid. She said it’s clear Pritzker supports efforts to improve the city’s economy, reduce violence, and provide opportunity to all Chicagoans.
“What both of us are focused on and what I know I’m focused on is to lead, lead through adversity, lead through challenging times, to make sure that we are focused on bringing everybody to the table, economic development to every neighborhood.
Lightfoot pointed out Pritzker's Republican challenger, State Senator Darren Bailey, is a frequent critic of the city and her policies, including after he received the endorsement of the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police.
“Here’s a guy that the day after the primary said, ‘oh, ah, I want to meet with Mayor Lightfoot,’ and then when he gets the FOP endorsement, is fire and brimstone about how terrible Chicago is, well, which Darren Bailey is showing up?
"This feckless person, no way, no how deserves to be taken seriously and he certainly doesn’t deserve anyone’s vote to be governor of this state. We have a governor that’s leading us, and he’s standing right here, his name is J.B. Pritkzer,” the mayor said.
Lightfoot declined to say whether she’s talked with the governor about a possible endorsement and the news conference ended before reporters had a chance to ask Pritzker about that.
