CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly’s final act as Chair of the Democratic Party of Illinois (DPI) was running the meeting at which she was ousted.

On Friday, Kelly dropped out of the race for DPI chair, which meant State Rep. Lisa Hernandez was named the new leader for Illinois Democrats on Saturday.

“This past week has been a challenging one,” Kelly said. “Honestly, the past 16 months [have] been challenging in many ways. I know my vision for a new kind of DPI was shared by so many, and obviously I’m disappointed that I wasn’t able to continue building the party we need in the state.”

Kelly became chairwoman after former House Speaker Mike Madigan left the party’s panel. Although Kelly had the backing of U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin and Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot,  Hernandez had the necessary votes locked up. Members elected Hernandez by acclamation.

“I have deep respect and admiration for Congresswoman Robin Kelly and appreciate everything she has done to support Illinois Democrats,” Hernandez said. “I’ve spoken with Congresswoman Kelly, and we are ready to move forward in a united fashion.”

Supporters of Hernandez, including Gov. J.B. Pritzker, said Kelly’s ability to fundraise had been hampered due to her status as a federal official.

Hernandez said she plans to sit down with Democratic officials and stakeholders all over the state in the coming weeks.

As she ceded the race to Hernandez, Kelly touted her accomplishments as DPI chair.

“We have overhauled our party from top to bottom, with a focus on building foundational support for all Democrats. Democratic campaigns, and Democratic organizations,” she said. “We have brought brand new staff and vendors, modernized and streamlined our operations, and brought the DPI into the 21st century.”

Hernandez said her focus was on holding Republicans accountable and winning in November.
