Lightfoot appoints lawyer, LGBTQ+ advocate as new 43rd Ward alderman

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Mayor Lori Lightfoot has announced Chicago’s new 43rd Ward alderman: Timmy Knudsen.

Knudson will replace Ald. Michele Smith, who retired in August.

Knudsen was born and raised in Wheaton and received his bachelor’s and law degree at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The mayor’s office wrote that ever since college Knudsen has lived in the 43rd Ward, which includes most of Lincoln Park.

He worked as counsel at Croke, Fairchild, Morgan and Beres, a law firm that practices in real estate law, cryptocurrency, labor, government affairs, regulatory law, and more.

According to the mayor’s office, Knudsen additionally started his own pro-bono law firm, which represented LGBTQ+ asylum seekers in Chicago and Tijuana. Officials said Knudsen has provided legal services to over 40 applicants for asylum.

Knudsen said he would be “an advocate and consensus builder” as 43rd Ward alderman.

In a statement, Lightfoot touted Knudsen’s ties to the Lincoln Park and Old Town community.

“Timmy is deeply connected to the needs of 43rd Ward residents and has the skills to communicate effectively, lean on the expertise of trusted messengers without ego, and encourage civic engagement,” Lightfoot said.

The Chicago Tribune reported that Knudsen was also featured on a 2018 episode of “House Hunters.”

Knudsen has served as the chair of the Chicago Zoning Board of Appeals. He also chaired the 43rd Ward Judicial Candidate Review Panel.
