(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Illinois has hit a new record for its daily number of new coronavirus cases.

The Department of Public Health on Thursday reported 4,015 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19, including 53 additional deaths.

Thursday’s tally exceeds the previous single day record of confirmed cases — 4,014 — that was set on May 12. State health officials say they don’t consider the 5,368 cases reported Sept. 4 a true daily record, because that tally reflected a backlog of cases.

In its latest round of testing, the state processed the results of 67,000 coronavirus tests. The statewide positivity rate is now at 4.9%, which is higher than it’s been in several weeks.

The positivity rate in the city of Chicago is now at 5.2%. Suburban cook county is at 6.2%, with the southwest suburbs at 6.6%; western suburbs at 7%; north and northwest suburbs at 6.3%.
