CROWN POINT, IND. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A semi tractor-trailer crashed off I-65 overnight Monday, spilling thousands of pounds of mail.

Indiana State Police said the crash happened about two miles south of I-65’s Crown Point Interchange, shortly after midnight. The semi was carrying 40,000 pounds of mail, much of which were strewn across a ditch, with the trailer ripped open.

Sergeant Glen Fifield said the driver of the semi was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol as well as possession of a controlled substance. The sergeant said a white powdery substance was allegedly found in the truck. He said the driver, Srdan Bezharevic of Willowbrook, is being held in the Lake County Jail.

The right lane of Southbound I-65 at the crash site was closed for a number of hours so mail from the split-open semi could be moved onto another semi.
