(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A McHenry nurse said she relied on her training and an educated guess when she helped a passenger in distress on a recent flight to Honolulu.
On September 6, while on her way out of O’Hare, headed for Hawaii for her honeymoon, Sharon Kucharski and her husband settled in to watch a movie. Then three hours into the flight, there was a commotion toward the front of the plane. A passenger was experiencing medical trouble.
Sharon told the Northwest Herald that a flight attendant remembered during a preflight chat that Sharon was a nurse. She followed the attendant and found an 80-year old woman barely responsive – sweating, slumped over, and her heart was racing. After asking her a series of questions, Sharon determined it was low blood sugar. She called for orange juice and peanut butter crackers. As the woman ate, she improved. Sharon sat with her for a time, and when Sharon returned to her seat, the plane broke out into applause.
The woman contacted her doctor when she landed, and Sharon and her husband had their honeymoon.
