(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The City of Highland Park announced that a juvenile has been charged with bringing a gun into Highland Park high School on Tuesday, which led to a lockdown at the school.

Officials said five people were taken into custody to be questioned, but only one has been charged. There was no plot to “engage in violence” at the school, they added.

“Highland Park High School students are to be commended for their composure under pressure and their calm, measured response to this incident, which greatly assisted law enforcement and school leadership in swiftly securing the high school campus,” a spokesperson wrote in a post on the City’s Facebook page.

The lockdown took place on the same day that some students staged a walkout over gun violence.

Highland Park Supt. Bruce Law said Township High School District 112 received an anonymous tip on Tuesday morning about a student in possession of a gun. As officers were investigating the tip, a student came forward and said they had seen a student with a gun.

Although there were no reports of shots fired, students and staff were ordered to remain in place as police secured the high school, City officials wrote on Facebook. The City said the lockdown was lifted after about one-and-a-half hours.

Highland Park police and Township High School District 113 will continue to investigate the incident.
