HIGHLAND PARK (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Highland Park High School was placed on lockdown for about two hours Tuesday and other area schools went into what’s called Secure Building Status, which disrupted voting.
The lockdown occurred because of “a report of a student potentially in possession of a gun at school,” according to the district.
Other area schools weren’t letting anyone in or out, which disrupted voting at Braeside Elementary School, Red Oak Elementary School and the Highland Park Public Library. The Lake County Clerk Anthony Vega said a court petition would be filed to keep the polling places open later.
No gun was found at the high school. Police say five students were taken into custody. They provided no further information.
“The scene has been secured and law enforcement has confirmed that there is no credible reason to continue the lockdown at Highland Park High School,” the city said in a statement.
The incident occurred on the same day some students staged a walk-out over gun violence.
