(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Naperville Police Department is cautioning residents to stay vigilant about identity theft.

Nine break-ins have been reported at large postal mailboxes across the city in the past two months.

Police Commander Michaus Williams told WBBM the thieves steal mail, then use stolen checks to commit identity theft.

So far 25 victims have been identified.

In an effort to reduce the criminal activity, police are recommending that anyone using the mail to send checks or other valuables do so using mail drop locations inside the post office.
