NAPERVILLE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A construction project in Naperville is gaining momentum, courtesy of a new source of funding.

It’s part of Naperville’s Riverwalk 2031 Master Plan. It will extend the popular trail from downtown to the nearby Edward Hospital campus. Nearly two acres of land between Washington Street and the west branch of the DuPage River, from Hillside Road to Martin Avenue, will be transformed.

A $700,000 gift from Edward-Elmhurst Health and $800,000 in state funding will allow the city to break ground on the South Gateway extension next year.

Leaders said the project will allow pedestrians to stroll a spacious riverwalk path, connecting the hospital campus near Martin Avenue with the park and river area through a new signature pedestrian bridge and gateway feature over the existing tributary outlets .

The city commission is still reviewing layouts and proposals.
