CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- After many years and many delays, the Navy Pier Flyover will officially open Monday.
The flyover was designed to ease the bottleneck of bikers and runners on the Lakefront Trail on the Lake Shore Drive bridge over the Chicago River.
The flyover is a dedicated path on the bridge that takes runners and bikers over the Navy Pier traffic at Grand Avenue and Illinois Street.
When ground was broken in 2014, the project was scheduled for completion in 2018.
While the first two phases were finished in 2018 and 2019, the section attached to the Lake Shore Drive bridge was two years behind schedule.
The city said it discovered unexpected maintenance on the bridge that was built in 1937.
