(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Gov. J.B. Pritzker and the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) have awarded nearly $10.5 million in grants to 21 higher education institutions in Illinois.
The funds came from the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund (GEER), and were designed to help offset negative effects from the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We know that the effects of the pandemic were not felt equally and took a bigger toll on the populations that historically have been left behind,” said IBHE Executive Director Ginger Ostro. “These additional GEER funds will help institutions meet students’ needs and teach us valuable lessons about what it will take to close equity gaps.”
The state said these funds will be used to provide academic and social-emotional learning support, especially for Black, latino, low-income, first generation, working adult, and rural students.
A majority of the GEER funding, $9.5 million, was allocated through a formula designed to ensure equitable distribution of funds, while just under $1 million was made available to schools through a competitive process in which schools applied for the funding.
